SPVORTS
- In researching this round I perused some non-US sites and found out that there are more sports than just baseball basketball and football out there so I tried to diversify myself here. So let’s start with this. This book is about a horse by Laura Hillenbrand, tell me the name of novel: “ “In 1938... the year's #1 newsmaker was not FDR, Hitler, or Mussolini. Nor was it Lou Gehrig or Clark Gable. The subject of the most newspaper column inches in 1938 wasn't even a person. It was an undersized, crooked-legged racehorse named…”
Seabiscuit
Seaside - The Kooks - So the 2005 film Fever Pitch is a lie. It’s progenitor is a 1992 novel by Nick Hornby about English Football and one club in particular. If you’re currently following the league it might help for me to say that this team is currently in second behind league leaders Chelsea but not too far ahead of 3rd place Tottenham. What EPL team was Fever Pitch originally written about?
Arsenal (The Gunners)
Arsenal Efectivo - Arsenal Efectivo - Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Everst in 2003 Robert Macfarlene imbued the essence of mountaineering into literary genius. Who was the first person to summit Mt. Everest in 1953? There were two who did it the song clue is for the Brit who did it with Tenzing Norgay of Nepal who definitely doesn’t receive enough credit. As inspiration his first words to his lifelong friend after summiting were: “Well, George, we knocked the bastard off.”
Sir Edmund Hillary
Hillary - Taylor Girlz - The Fight by Normal Mailer captured the historic bout called The Rumble in the Jungle which took place in Zaire. Taking place in 1974 between “the Greatest” and “Big George” name me the two boxers who fought. I’ll give you an extra point if you tell me which one won the fought.
Muhammad Ali & George Forman
George Forman - Jeremy Martian
Bonus: Borrowing from Sports Illusrated’s Top 100 Sports Books of All time I want you to name me the first 5. 3 of them are about baseball, one about football that became an iconic television series, and the other a book about boxing.

So a big part of Novels is obviously the ideas behind them and is the theme for tonight. This rounds going to include some techniques that you may or may not have heard of and a bunch of random and hopefully cool questions!
- So a crazy and usually unforeseen narrative technique is one where the characters lose all control and something greater takes over. Used a lot by sci-fi nerds mostly because of halo adaptations and youtube videos. Tell me the Latin phrase used for such actions.
Deus ex Machina
Deus ex Machina - Deadmau5 - In Medias res refers to when a story begins at a point other than the beginning. It’s essentially a narrative hook because you’re always looking forward to that one big event. For example Homer’s Odyssey begins and ends with his return to his home. What city is Odysseus’s home?
Ithaka
Ithaca is Gorgeous by Dylan Owen - So Frames of narrative is a pretty crazy literary concept that I wrote about freshman year and thought I was making up but it’s actually a real thing. It’s basically who tells the story and how the plot progresses and what not. Anyways one of the simplest frames of reference is one through which the main character tells the story. What is this kind of perspective called?
First-person Narration
The First Person on Earth - Tracy Chapman - I love witty things. An example is something spelled the same forwards and backwards. Or sentences that are constructed to be the same. What are these things called?
Palindromes
Fake Palindromes - Andrew Bird
Bonus: My favorite thing ever though is stream of consciousness. I found a list of 10 writers who used them and I’m going to give you some of their famous works and you need to tell me their names.
- Pointed Roofs - Dorothy Richardson - Wicked Ones by Dorothy
- The Sound and the Fury; As I lay Dying - William Faulkner - Revolutionary by Faulkner
- Finnegans Wake; Ulysses - James Joyce - Hold Back the River by James Bay
- Mrs Dalloway; To the Lighthouse - Virginia Woolf - Hungry Like the Wolf - Duran Duran
- On the Road - Jack Kerouac - Better Together by Jack Johnson
